It’s definitely been awhile since I’ve posted anything here. My apologies. Those of you who are on Facebook already know some of this, but I need to put it all together in one post so we are all on the same sheet of music.
In my last post, I said I was planning on putting my house up for sale at the beginning of 2013 and would then leave for Honduras after that. Well, circumstances have changed. I will now retire between June 1 and August 1 of 2011. Yes, that’s next year. It still seems strange to say that, but, God willing, that’s when it will happen. If I can get everything worked out and all preparations completed in time, I will start language school in Costa Rica in August. I plan to attend two trimesters, finishing in April, 2012. Then, I will relocate to Tegucigalpa to serve as an independent missionary .
I am currently enrolled in a 100-hour certification course in Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL). When I finish that, I will probably take a 50-hour course in Teaching Young Learners. I hope to use the techniques and strategies I learn in the courses to help people in Honduras learn English. I have no plans to teach for pay, but rather as a volunteer teacher or tutor through the church.
I believe I have my financial situation figured out so that I will not have to seek financial supporters for my basic living expenses. I will, of course, seek ministry partners who will pray regularly for me and for the people I will encounter. If you are interested in being one of those ministry partners, please let me know. Either leave a comment, or send me an email.
This past Saturday, I put my plan down on paper. It was good to put it all together. I will update it as time goes on, and I complete the preparatory steps mentioned in the plan. I also identified an organization in Honduras that can help me get a residency visa for religious workers in Honduras. This will enable me to save several hundred dollars each year in travel expenses, since I would otherwise have to leave the country every 90 days when my tourist visa would expire. I am very happy to have found this organization.
That’s all for now. My writing time is greatly limited for awhile, but I will try to post a note here on occasion.
May God bless you all! Thanks for your prayers. I ask that you continue to pray for me as I prepare for this move.
